Treat yourself to world-class orchestral music as a guest of ours at The Goodwin here in downtown Hartford, Connecticut: Enjoying our boutique accommodations on Haynes Street, you’re mere minutes from the home base of the city’s venerable and much-loved Hartford Symphony Orchestra.
The orchestra is headquartered at the historic Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts (which we recently profiled here at The Goodwin blog—check it out!), and launches a milestone season—its 75th—this October.
Introducing the Hartford Symphony Orchestra
The Hartford Symphony Orchestra got its start during the lean years of the Great Depression. Francis Goodwin II successfully applied for funds from a program of the Federal Emergency Relief Corporation intended to support musicians, and in November 1934 what was then called the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Hartford presented its first concert at Hartford’s West Middle School.
Today the Hartford Symphony Orchestra performs better than 200 concerts a year across multiple annual series—including Masterworks, POPS!, Musical Dialogues, and the summertime Talcott Mountain Music Festival—and at venues well beyond the Connecticut capital. Carolyn Kuan has directed the orchestra since 2011; her assistant conductor is Adam Boyles.
The Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s 75th Season
The 75th season of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra kicks off with one of the most indelible pieces of classical music ever penned: Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, presented from Friday, October 5th through Sunday, October 7th at the Bushnell’s Belding Theater.
That’ll also launch the symphony’s 2018-2019 Masterworks Series, other early performances of which include Brass & Brahms (November 2nd through November 4th), Tchaikovsky’s Firsts (November 30th through December 2nd), and Bach & Beyond (January 18ththrough January 20th).
The high entertainment of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s Saturday-night POPS! Series, meanwhile, gets underway on October 27thwith a screening and live scoring of Star Wars: A New Hope, putting the spotlight on John Williams’ indelible composition. On December 8th, meanwhile, Leslie Odom, Jr.—who gained wide renown (and a Tony Award) for his portrayal of Aaron Burr in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton—joins the orchestra for an evening of Broadway classics, holiday numbers, and more.
Another awesome program to keep an eye on during the 2018-2019 season is Sunday Serenades, which sees the orchestra perform at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.
