Introducing the Connecticut Science Center
The Connecticut Science Center, which opened in 2009 after years of planning, sets as its goal “inspiring lifelong learning through interactive and innovative experiences that explore our changing world through science.”
Better than 165 hands-on exhibits form the core of the Science Center. These include, for instance, Science Alley, which arrestingly evokes the history and the breadth of scientific inquiry and exploration; Planet Earth, covering everything from extreme weather to dinosaurs; Forces in Motion, which introduces some fundamental physics concepts as visitors design heli-flyers and other vehicles; and River of Life, revealing the natural rhythms of the nearby Connecticut River.
The Science Center also hosts traveling exhibits, the current ones being Curious George, which uses the famous chimp to explore STEM concepts, and Bionic Me, an immersive look at the intersection of human anatomy and technology.
The Connecticut Science Center Theater
The Science Center also hosts the state-of-the-art Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman Foundation Science Theater, which employs stadium seating, a 30-by-40-foot screen, 3D projector, and 18,000-watt sound system to bring the wonders of the world into high-definition glory. Besides an array of educational films, the theater also puts on live science shows.
Programs & Special Events at the Connecticut Science Center
From workshops and overnighters for teens to a wide variety of science-themed adult programs, the Science Center takes its function as a hub of “lifelong learning” seriously, offering an array of activities, classes, and social events to augment its exhibits and on-screen/onstage presentations.
