We’re referring, of course, to the illustrious Hartford Wolf Pack, which slings the puck just steps from our boutique hotel over at the XL Center!
Introducing the Hartford Wolf Pack
The Wolf Pack has called Hartford home since 1997, but the franchise—among the oldest in professional hockey—dates back to 1926, when the team first formed as the Providence Reds in Rhode Island’s capital. The team’s residency in Hartford is only bested by seven AHL outfits when it comes to continuously playing in a single city.
The Hartford Wolf Pack—the major American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Rangers—has won the AHL’s crowning Calder Cup once (the 1999-2000 season) and triumphed as division champions four times, most recently in 2014-2015.
Besides serving as the current H.Q. for the Hartford Wolf Pack, the XL Center formerly hosted the Hartford Whalers of the National Hockey League (1979-1997) as well as the team’s preceding incarnation in the World Hockey Association, the New England Whalers, established in 1972.
Upcoming Wolf Pack Games at the XL Center
The next few weeks see the Hartford Wolf Pack—as of this writing, at the bottom of the “pack” in the AHL Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division—hosting some exciting home games, including a Sunday, February 17th matchup against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins and a Friday, February 22nd game against the Springfield Thunderbirds.
On Saturday, February 23rd, the Wolf Pack faces the Providence Bruins on the XL Center rink: a little history summoned up in that one, given the Hartford team’s Rhode Island origin. On Wednesday, February 27th, the Wolf Pack closes out the month with a home game against the Hershey Bears.
