Dive deep into some classic yuletide spirit on a December getaway at The Goodwin, where you’ll be but a hop, skip, and a jump from Hartford Stage’s beloved annual presentation of A Christmas Carol.
As Classic As They Come: A Christmas Carol
Hartford Stage’s Rachel Alderman-directed production of Charles Dickens’ “ghost story of Christmas” began on November 23rd and runs through December 29th. Now’s the time to lock down your tickets—and your boutique accommodations in downtown Hartford at The Goodwin, barely two blocks from the theater!
Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol as a novella back in the 1840s: an era, as Hartford Stage notes in its StageNotes, in which Christmas traditions weren’t quite so front-and-center this time of year as they are today. Indeed, the popularity of Dickens’ tale, which focused not on the religious roots of Christmas but its themes of togetherness, warmth, and goodwill, helped establish some of the modern holiday’s touchstones, not least the phrase “Merry Christmas!” itself.
You likely know the story: Crotchety Ebenezer Scrooge “bah-humbugs” the merriment and charity of Christmas, only to come around to a bigger-hearted perspective through the instructive visits of several spirits—the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Future, not to mention anguished Jacob Marley—overnight on Christmas Eve.
As familiar as A Christmas Carol is today, its story—and its blend of yuletide atmosphere and more Halloween-worthy ghostliness—never fails to captivate, and that’s certainly the case with Hartford Stage’s version!
