Who couldn’t use a full-on dose of natural beauty about right now? Well, as a guest of ours here at The Goodwin, you’re well set up for that sort of rejuvenation: You’ll find yourself within a short drive of one of Connecticut’s most lauded attractions, Lavender Pond Farm.
The Botanical Ecstasies of Lavender Pond Farm
Encompassing some 25 acres, more than 30 garden beds, and nearly 10,000 individual lavender plants, Lavender Pond Farm’s pure-as-driven-snow goal is “to help make the world a more beautiful place.”
This time of year, June through July, sees that exquisite acreage—solar-powered, by the way—turned into a purplish paradise: one of the most gob-smacking sights to be had in the Hartford hinterland. Lavender Pond Farm’s open every day from 10 AM to 4 PM, rain or shine and free of charge. A heads up: This property was voted in a USA Today poll as the Best Connecticut Attraction, so you REALLY ought to consider swinging by.
The appeal of Lavender Pond Farm in summer is not only visual, of course, but also aromatic: a joy to walk through, especially with the farm’s honeybees and other pollinators doing their bustling, buzzing thing.
The flowery dreamscape isn’t the only attraction, even if it’s definitely the headliner act. You might also run into Flora, the super-amiable farm dog, or nab a few looks at the “Broadway Chicks”: Lavender Pond Farm’s flock of endearing, busybody chickens. You can also admire an Arnold M. Graton covered bridge and the still that the farm employs to turn out its lavender hydrosol and essential oils. The farm also offers rides aboard its Lavender Express train—currently, given the COVID-19 situation, open on any given go-round to immediate family members only.
There’s also (naturally) a farm store at which you can purchase all sorts of lavender-related products, from soap to pillows.
