Introducing Hartford Stage
Jacques Cartier established Hartford Stage in 1963, directing its very first production, Shakespeare’s Othello, the following spring. Since then, the Hartford Stage Company has presented more than 70 national and world premieres, including the works of such esteemed playwrights as Edward Albee, Tennessee Williams, Eve Ensler, Horton Foote, Vladimir Nabokov, and Beth Henley.
Hartford Stage also runs a rich program of workshops, classes, residencies, and other outreach, deepening its exceptional value to the community.
This coming June, Melia Bensussen will become just the sixth artistic director of Hartford Stage, taking over from Darko Tresnjak, who’s held the position since 2011.
Upcoming Productions at Hartford Stage
Hartford Stage’s rich year-round programming ensures there’s always something intriguing on offer just blocks from your home base at The Goodwin. Next on the schedule is Detroit ’67 (February 14th through March 10th), Dominique Morisseau’s drama set against the backdrop of the Detroit race riots; Jade King Carroll directs this production, presented in partnership with the McCarter Theatre Center. From March 21st through April 20th, Sean Fooley will be directing Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, Robert and David Goodale’s play based on P.G. Wodehouse’s The Code of the Woosters and his indelible comedic characters, the hapless Bertie Wooster and his endlessly resourceful butler Jeeves.
Farther down the pike, get excited for the musical The Flamingo Kid (May 9th through June 9th), a Robert L. Freeman story about a Brooklyn teen who spends the summer of 1963 working the ritzy Long Island private club El Flamingo. Tresnjak will direct the production, which is choreographed by Denis Jones.
