With plentiful snow and a surprisingly impressive elevational spread, Connecticut serves as a stellar winter playground—and with elegant digs at The Goodwin, you’re perfectly poised to take advantage!
Here are a few of the topnotch ski areas and other winter-recreation hubs within an easy drive from our historic hotel in downtown West Hartford: Come play in the snow while luxuriating in the finest of hospitality at the newly renovated Goodwin Hotel!
Only about 20 miles away from West Hartford in Connecticut’s handsome Northwest Highlands, Ski Sundown—which opened back in 1964 as Satan’s Ridge Ski Area—offers 16 runs, 625 feet of vertical, and fabulous nighttime skiing. Besides enjoying downhill and snowboarding, you can take to one of two terrain parks, go cross-country skiing, or take snowsports lessons (aimed at both kids and adults).
Since 1961, Powder Ridge Ski Area has offered primo skiing and other snowsports fun up on Besek Mountain, part of the mighty traprock crest called the Metacomet Ridge. Powder Ridge hosts 19 runs and 550 feet of vertical, and offers night skiing as well as year-round recreation courtesy of its 365 Synthetic Snow Park, new this year. It’s not only about skiing and snowboarding up on Besek Mountain: The resort also provides tubing, snowbiking, and other recreational opportunities.
Open since 1964 and less than 20 miles to our southwest, Mount Southington tempts with 14 trails (pretty evenly split between beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs), 425 feet of vertical, a terrain park, and both snowmaking and night-skiing capabilities.
Winter Fun on Nearby Public Lands
Within a half-hour’s drive from The Goodwin, Penwood State Park offers 800 acres of outdoor adventure—including fine cross-country ski trails—in the traprock forests of the Talcott Mountain ridge. Another possibility are the winter routes of the Nepaug State Forest; the Tunxis Trail, part of the Blue-Blazed network, can be great for snowshoeing when conditions are favorable.
